One of the most well-known non-profit organizations, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), has a mission “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.”
Founded in 1920 by civil liberties activists led by Roger Baldwin, Crystal Eastman and Albert DeSilver, the organization is known for taking up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues, such as equality for LGBT people, establishing digital privacy protection and preserving the right to vote.
The founding attorney of the McConnell Law Firm in Wichita, Kansas, Jonathan W. McConnell, belongs to the ACLU’s Crystal Eastman Leadership Society. The Society was named after one of the organization’s co-founders, and recognizes supporters who have donated between $1,000 and $10,000 to the ACLU.
“Helping the underdog has always been one of my personal missions,” said McConnell. “By assisting my clients who are in trouble or have made a mistake and by supporting organizations like the ACLU, I’m able to do this.”
