To encourage organizations that enhance the Wichita community, the McConnell Law Firm proudly supports the Wichita Wagonmasters. While looking for a theme and way to promote the Wichita River Festival, the first director of Wichita Festivals, Inc., Pat Brooks, presented the idea of Windwagon Smith to the board of directors in 1973. She got the idea from a 1961 Disney cartoon called The Saga of Windwagon Smith.
With official permission from Walt Disney Enterprises, the board officially adopted the Windwagon and Admiral Windwagon Smith as the enduring symbols of the Wichita River Festival. A new Admiral Windwagon Smith is chosen each year to preside over Wichita River Festival events and various other local events throughout the year.
Since the organization’s inception, the Wichita Wagonmasters have made promoting the “good life” in Wichita their primary goal. Beyond taking on many central planning and administration roles during the Wichita River Festival, they hold or sponsor fundraisers, cook meals, give tours of the Arkansas River, and do their best to improve the lives of all Wichita residents.
