What is Diabetes?
According to the Mayo Clinic, diabetes refers to a group of diseases that affect how our body uses blood sugar (glucose), ultimately leaving too much sugar in our blood, which can lead to serious health problems.
“Thirty-four million Americans have diabetes, and every 21 seconds, someone new is diagnosed,” said Jonathan W. McConnell, the founding criminal defense attorney at the McConnell Law Firm. “Sadly, diabetes causes more deaths than breast cancer and AIDS combined.”
Making an Impact
In 2018, the ADA:
- Funded 318 new and continuing diabetes research projects across a spectrum of scientific approaches, toward the promise of a cure.
- Raised more than $19.6 million through the Tour de Cure, Step Out and signature events.
- Fought for funds to keep diabetes research and programs going, securing an increase of nearly $170 million in federal funding.
- Hosted nearly 7,000 children with type 1 diabetes at week-long summer camps.
