Established in 1922 as the Wichita Community Chest and going by many names since then, The United Way of the Plains was first commissioned by the Wichita Chamber of Commerce to coordinate funding for 25 local social service agencies. Throughout their history, their mission has remained the same: to improve the lives of citizens of South Central Kansas “by identifying community needs and mobilizing resources to meet those needs through a network of capable and innovative partnerships.”
Focus Areas
United Way of the Plains partners with local businesses to raise money and encourage volunteers to assist them in supporting four main focus areas:
- Education – The cornerstone of individual success and by extension the success of the community. United Way of the Plains has many programs that encourage early childhood development, reading, and regular attendance. Additionally, they provide volunteer-driven mentoring, assistance for early childhood development, services for children with special needs, quality child care and much more.
- Income – Financial stability allows one to have a good life and provide for their family. United Way of the Plains provides employment assistance, job training, financial counseling, tax preparation, and more to allow people in our community to support themselves.
- Health – Illness can strike anyone and it’s not uncommon to see the cost chronic illness bankrupt families. United Way of the Plains provides counseling and support for prescriptions, mental health, disabilities, immunizations, and more.
- Making Connections – United Way wants to connect people with the services they need and to make sure volunteers can provide their services where they’re needed most.
